WITH
ITS ROLLING HILLS, Beaver
Valley, Niagara Escarpment and the Saugeen
River
with its many tributaries,
Grey
County
is a strong contender for the
most beautiful county in southern Ontario. Many artists and craftspeople apparently think so too, for the
countryside is dotted with studios and workshops.
On Sunday June 14, the William Morris Society of Canada
will sponsor a bus tour to visit six of them: Beaver Valley Glassworks,
Rockrose Pottery, Garlan Stained Glass, Larry A. Cluchey (wood working),
Richard Mund Pottery and West Meadow Press. A catered late lunch will be
provided at The Hedges, home and bookshop of Fred Turner, who specializes
in art books, including those relating to the Pre-Raphaelites and the
Arts and Crafts Movement. Many members will remember Fred, who was on
the WMSC board for many years when he lived in Toronto. The bus will leave at
10 a.m. sharp from the corner of Yonge Street
and Asquith Avenue, one block north of Bloor Street
beside the Toronto Reference Library. We expect to be in Flesherton by 12
or 12:30 p.m. After visiting three of the studios in that area the bus
will head west to the town of Durham
and the Hedges for refreshments at around 3 to 3:30 p.m. after which
it will continue west to visit the final three studios. We will be
heading back to Toronto
around 6 to 6:30 p.m. and expect to arrive at Yonge and Asquith around 9
to 9:30 p.m. Because of the lateness of the catered lunch, travellers
are advised to bring something along to tide them over until
mid-afternoon. If members wish, we could stop somewhere for coffee and
cakes on the journey home.
