John Burrows will speak on William
Morris in Boston and the Old Colony
Style. It is fair to say that New Englanders
were highly receptive to William Morris. They commissioned church
windows, purchased wallpaper, fabric and carpet in significant amounts,
and immediately
accessioned his published lectures for their libraries. Morris &
Company presented an impressive exhibition of their work at Boston’s
Foreign Fair of 1883-84, and his artistic philosophy was infused into a
newly coined design movement: the Old Colony Style.
John Burrows is a design historian and owner of J.R. Burrows &
Company, Historical-Design Merchants of Rockland, Massachusetts. He has
researched the influence of William Morris in Boston, the Foreign Fair,
and the interconnection with the
Old Colony Style of the 1880s. A toast and cake to celebrate William
Morris’s 176th Birthday will immediately follow the lecture.
This event will be hosted at the home of a member of the society and is
open only to members, who will have received more details in the last
bulletin on location and RSVPing.
