Art Galleries & Museums Out-of-doors:
Exploring Historic Cemeteries

October 18, 2007
University College, Room 140
7:30 p.m.

WMSC member Jane Irwin will present this illustrated lecture. As a mature student, Jane studied English literature at McMaster University and went on to earn her doctorate at Cambridge University with a dissertation on George Eliot. She has always been very interested in the history of art and architecture, and is an amateur local historian.

After teaching nineteenth- and twentieth- century literature at Trent University for 10 years, Jane “retired” to spend time in the independent bookstore that she and her husband have in Burlington, and to write books of her own. Her most recent, to be published this autumn, is Old Canadian Cemeteries: Places of Memory. From this vast topic, she proposes to make a selection from the 6,000 (and more) images she has taken of monuments mostly in Canada.

Jane will show and discuss works of special interest to admirers of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
